Intel Stable Image Platform Program (SIPP)Yes Intel Software Guard Extensions (Intel SGX)No Operating system installed: Windows 10 Pro Docking connector typeMicrosoft Surface Connector, Microsoft Surface Cover Maximum video resolution3840 x 2160 pixels Rear camera resolution (numeric): 10 MP I do love the SP8, but I actually think for a portable device with decent power that you would dock the SP7 or SP7+ are/were a better buy at the time.- Processor generation11th gen Intel® Core™ i7 I have (but thinking of getting rid of) the i7 Book 2 which is fanless in the clipboard/screen iirc but the base has a fan never had perf issues on it but I would guess they did compromise in some way on perf compared to if they had a fan in both as per the trade offs. TBH the Pro 8 i5 seems to kick the fans on less for me the longer I’ve used it, maybe it was a firmware update but when I first got it they seemed to kick in a bit early. I never had issues with my SP5 i5 that I can remember but yeah it’s definitely a trade off. Strange thing on the SQ3 though is it has the same battery as the intel version doesn’t it? So it may just be dead space inside the device, possibly needed to allow natural dissipation of heat I guess Leaving the Pro 9 i5 on 'Better performance' all the time will likely take a bigger toll on battery life. It seems that the base performance of the Pro 9 i5 isn't as good as the base performance of the Pro 8 i7. Up until this point, I had always left both on the default 'Recommended' power setting.Īfter making those changes, the Pro 9 on 'Better Performance' now performs as good as the Pro 8 on 'Recommended'. With both machines on battery power, I left the Pro 8 on the default 'Recommended' power setting, but changed the Pro 9 to 'Better Performance'. Everything became smooth and snappy.Īfter discovering that, I decided to try changing the performance modes. Performance became on par with the Pro 8 (which was on battery power). The Pro 9 also opened applications consistently slower than the Pro 8 did.īut when I docked the Pro 9 to my Surface Dock 2 and connected to an external monitor, mouse, and keyboard, it painted a different picture. Animations on the Pro 9 would stutter and browsing in Edge was also quite choppy. I'm not a heavy user), the Pro 9 i5 is noticeably slower and choppier in performance when compared to the Pro 8 i7. After setting up both machines in the same way (basically installing and using PWA's via Microsoft Edge, like Reddit, YouTube, Twitter, etc. However, testing them out, it's not as clear-cut to me. Since everyone was saying that this year's i5 is better than last year's i7, I thought it would be an easy decision to make, and was planning to return the Pro 8. I actually bought the Pro 8 i7 when it was on sale at Best Buy, and I just bought the Pro 9 i5 bundle from Costco. this is why it is good practice to run benchmarks and prepare for gaming sessions by getting the battery to 100% beforehand. when plugging in power and the battery is charging, it creates a decent amount of heat, so it wouldn't surprise me if your SP9 was throttled quickly when charging. So in the SP8 vs SP9 comparison, while watts can't be sustained as high, the efficiency and extra cores of the SP9 makes it more performant even using less watts.Īlso I haven't tested this behavior, but sure. In my testing The SP8 can be kept at 30-35W with a fan, while the SP9 can only maintain 28-32W with a fan. However the cpu in the SP9 is also more powerful / efficient even while using less watts than the SP8 I haven't encountered a scenario (Sustained or otherwise) where the SP8 is really beating out the SP9 (although it is possible certain scenarios for this exist).Īs another counterpoint The SP9 can burst performance to much higher watt levels than the SP8 could. ![]() maybe I should have.) I agree the SP9 throttles more than the SP8 but keep reading. I've done some testing (almost released a video, but didn't bother. The 9 requires a fan on the back of it to not throttle much sooner than the 8 especially when playing a game or charging via usb c.Įven if it were throttling faster, which I doubt, the SP9 is still faster than the SP8, and has more stable performance during gaming.
